Culturing and Identifying Violacein Producing Bacteria
In our lab we are interested in collecting freshwater samples from all over the Hudson Valley (and beyond!) and examining them for the presence of violacein producing bacterial strains. If you are interested in this project, please email the lab at [email protected].
Below are links to our initial publication in the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education by the Jude Lab, in collaboration with several local schools who helped take part in this pilot study, as well as a presentation that will help explain the project and show you how to get involved!

Sustainable Textile Dyes from Microbes
In a project collaboration with the artisans of the Ain Leuh Womens Cooperative in Ain Leuh, Morocco, The Artisan Project, and Around the World in 80 Fabrics, fellow Microbiologist Dr. Anne Madden of The Microbe Institute and I were able to travel to Morocco in the summer of 2023 to look for microbes capable of producing pigment. This Story Map gives more details and links to this project.
